“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you” - Hosea 10:12.
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” - 1Cor. 3:6 .
A fallow ground is a virgin uncultivated ground or one left to recover its nutrients depreciated from previous cultivations. It also represents the untapped potentials and resources in and around a person. Grounds are left fallow not necessarily because they are not fertile or cannot be put to some other uses but because of reasons which include;
1. Availability of other fertile lands. This is when a person relegates a potential or ability to the background because he has other potentials he thinks have better prospects. For instance a person might neglect a singing potential because he can also play football.
2. Ignorance of the presence of a potential. When a potential is not known to exist, it will sure be ignored. For instance Gideon never knew he was a “mighty man of valour” and could confront his enemies until his true self was reveal to him by God.
3. Ignorance of the potentials of the skill, talent or resources. There are cases where people don’t know the worth of the potentials they carry and so abuse, misuse or don’t even use them at all. Esau was a case in point of someone who lacked the knowledge of the worth of what he has and so sold it for far less than what it was worth. He sold his birthright almost for nothing.
4. Ignorance of what to do with a potential. I have seen talents writers, singers, footballers who don’t know how to rightly package to earn from it. The Bible says “my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
5. When the bearer of a potential lacks the ability, skill and knowledge to optimally utilize his talents, potentials and resources in and around him.
6. When the person is lazy – Proverbs 6:6-11; 22:13; 26:13.
(Read also Psalm 119:16, Proverbs 1:7, 2 Peter 1:3, 1 Corinthians 3:6)
I pray that God will give you the strength, wisdom, grace, and every other resource that will help you optimally utilize your potentials such that at death you would have emptied yourself of everything you should and have maximally impacted lives.
May it be so unto you in Jesus name. Amen. Shalom!
