BIBLE TEXT: Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him."
WHAT IS ANOINTING?
The word anointing can be defined from 3 standpoints: ordinary, ecclesiastical and official.
ORDINARY: Anointing in the ordinary sense is performed by pouring oil on the head or parts of the body. Anointing the body or head with oil was common with the Jews, many other Oriental nations. (Ruth 3:3, Micah 6:15, Luke7:46 )
OFFICIAL: Anointing is also performed when inaugurating/commissioning someone into the office of;
a. A Prophet, (1 Kings 19:16, 1 Chronicles 16:22 ; Psalms 105:15)
b. A Priest, ( Exodus 40:15 ; Numbers 3:3; Exodus 29:29; Leviticus 16:32) so that "the priest that is anointed," (Leviticus 4:3) is generally thought to mean the high priest.
c. A King, Anointing was the principal sign and ritual performed during the inauguration of the Jewish Kings. (1 Samuel 9:16 ; 10:1 ; 1 Kings 1:34 1 Kings 1:39)
d. Inanimate objects also were anointed with oil, signifying that they are set apart for religious service. For instance, Jacob anointed a pillar at Bethel. (Genesis 31:13 ; Exodus 30:26-28)
Ecclesiastical Use: Anointing with oil is advised in the book James 5 for the recovery of the sick. (James 5:14) Jesus' disciples also practiced this. ( Mark 6:13 ).
WHAT DOES ANOINTING DO?
1. It releases divine power on the anointed fellow. Acts 10:38 says Jesus was anointed with power and Holy Spirit and He went about doing good and healing those tormented by the devil. Obviously, the anointing Jesus received empowered Him to perform miracles.
2. It gives the anointed the authority to rule over men (1Samuel 10:1). When a man received kingly anointing, he receives divine back and authority to rule as a king.
3. It transforms a man, ushering him into higher and deeper spiritual experience and performance. Saul is a glaring example as seen in 1 Samuel 10:1-12. (1 Kings 19:16, 2 Kings13:20).
4. It breaks yokes (Isaiah 10:27).
5. It empowers you to subdue your enemies. Judges 14:5-6.
6. It brings healing. (James 5:14; Mark 6:13).
When a man is anointed by God, he enters a realm of glorious expeditions. He becomes a terror to the kingdom of darkness, mighty and unconquerable.
